"40 Lb. Head: New release no lightweight"

Alan K. Stout - Music on the Menu

The Weekender — November 22, 2002

For area favorites 40-Lb. Head, the third time's a charm. The popular band will release its third CD, "Third Shift" on Tuesday, and its mebers call it their most decisive work.

Bassist Brian Egenski credits his guitarist brother Steve as the main creative force behind the project. He says the songwriting for the new album began shortly after the group completed its last CD.

"Steve writes pretty much constantly," Brian says. "By th time we finished the last album, he was saying, 'I don't know if I'm going to write anymore.' Not even a month later, he had four songs completed."

Singer and keyboardist Jason Egenski (also a brother) and drummer Mike Zubritski join Brian and Steve in The Head. The new CD follows 1998's "Savior Self" and 2000's "Hills and Valleys." Tracks include "My Dream," "I Lie To Me, You Lie To You," "Last Kick" and "Feel the Sun."

It's just basic rock 'n' roll," Brian says. "Steve writes what he feels, and nobodyt ever argues over structure or anything like that. Ig anything is ever changed, we try to do it like The Beatles did and just go with what everyone agrees is the best."

The band the CD, like it's succesor, at its own studio. For the last record, however, the manufacturing company did the mastering. This time, the band took the masters to Saturation Acres studio in Danville, where Paul Smith of The Badlees tweaked them.

"Last time, when it came back, it sounded bigger, it sounded clesaner, and it sounded better, but that was it," Brian says. "This time, going to Saturation Acres, we actually sat down with Paul, and he had his input, and we had our input. It was a great experience. Those guys are very knowledgeable, and they've got a great set-up down there, so it was like the icing on the cake."

"Third Shift" will be released Tuesday and will be available only at Gallery of Sound stores. The band will have three CD release parties and will perform Wednesday at Club Xcess in Edwardsville and at The Voodoo Lounge next Friday and The Staircase next Saturday.

Egenski says a bit of trpidation always precedes the release of a new cd but a fun time always results.

We're all excited," he says. "We have more followers and more supporters now that we ever did, and I just hope everyone digs it. We're proud of it."
